April 17, 2015 - Babies at Bahrsteads

This year at Bahrstead’s were are bringing in another round of chickens with the addition of some turkey chicks called goblets.   I picked them up from the post office!  Who knew you could send birds through the mail?

What fun it is to see these small creatures come into your life for a few months and help you better understand the beauty of nature, the challenge of raising them and the sobering reminder of the food source they become for us.  When raising birds for different reasons, it grounds us to be more humane, kind, thoughtful and respectful to all animals in kind.

Now, I didn’t mean to put a wet blanket on our feathered friends, because up to their last day we get to see and experience the cackles and quirkiness of our chicks that evolve into beautiful adult birds.  Through the generations, much has been  referenced of our fine feathered friends and at Backyardchickens.com they have a slew of chicken sayings that they have collected.    Do you know all of them?  We didn’t… Enjoy!

Quotable Chicken Quotes
